Emma Hill had her third child in March 2020, just weeks before Victorians were thrown into Covid lockdown.
Struggling with perinatal and postnatal mental health issues and forced to isolate at home, Emma found it difficult to find the help she needed. She tried several different avenues, including speaking to a psychologist, before scheduling an appointment with a hypnotherapist when the lockdown was lifted.
‘I didn’t know what to expect, but I left feeling so much lighter and powerful. It was such great reset for me,’ Emma said. ‘I decided that it was something I would love to do- particularly to help other mums transition into motherhood.’
Emma walked away from her corporate job to study Clinical Trauma Hypnotic Sciences, and now helps people in a wealth of areas.
‘My initial goal was to work with mothers- to support parents to work with their kids- but I get a lot of different people who want help in different areas- such as emotional eating or anxiety,’ Emma said.
‘There is a link between our mind and our body. I want to help quiet the noise, connect people with their inner truth and help them get back to their authentic self.’
Emma customises each session to her clients’ needs. She supports them to hypnotically venture into their subconscious mind, where powerful changes can be made to their thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
‘I always tell my clients that they are the boss, not me,’ she said. ‘Some people think that I can control their body or their thoughts, but that’s not true. I have a lot of respect for every person’s inner knowing. It may sound cliché but we really all do have the answers we need inside ourselves, it’s just that sometimes we need help to work through past experiences and beliefs to be able to access that – which is where I come in.”
And whilst many people embrace the state of hypnosis, others struggle to relax.
‘The state of hypnosis is similar to that feeling when you’re drifting off to sleep. You are still aware of your surroundings and you’re in full control. If you’re willing and can follow instructions, you will be able to reach a state of hypnosis.’ Emma said.
‘I do have some clients who have severe anxiety who struggle to let go, but we can work with that. It’s about gently supporting you to be able feel safer in your body’
Emma has also created a safe space for women by running regular women’s circles- a place free from judgement and ridicule.
‘It’s a place where we can all show up as we are, sit in a circle, and if we want to, share what we want and drop the crap. We can say we’ve had a bad week or that everything’s turned out rubbish or that we yelled at the kids, and it’s okay. Sometimes we journal, or discuss what we want to do next,’ Emma said.
‘Some people hear about women’s circles and think it’s a bit out there; a bit alternative- but women’s circles date back hundreds of years. It’s a safe place.’
